Ludwig Augustinsson may get his first minutes of the season on Saturday (15:30 CET) against Schalke, 189 days after his last Bundesliga appearance. The Swede is finally available to play again having recovered from his knee operation in August. Niklas Moisander, however, will miss the Schalke game as he continues to work towards match fitness.

Florian Kohfeldt now has an additional option in defence following the return of Ludwig Augustinsson. The 25-year-old could take up his preferred position at left-back for the Schalke match. However, Werder’s head coach kept his cards close to his chest on the matter: “Ludde will take another day off and won’t train today. Nevertheless, he is totally available for the weekend and is a candidate to make the starting XI.”

Werder’s international players have returned from duty abroad and will also be ready for the game on Saturday. “All the internationals have made it back in one piece,” said Florian Kohfeldt.

Leo Bittencourt and Philipp Bargfrede will not take part in the team training session on Thursday afternoon. Werder’s playmaker is still struggling with a slight cold. Bargfrede is simply being rested. Both players are in contention to play against Schalke.

Niklas Moisander’s comeback will have to wait, though. “Niklas won’t play on Saturday. We will see what happens in the next couple of weeks,” said Kohfeldt. The Werder captain is still suffering from a muscular injury.
