Marco Friedl celebrated a successful debut for the Austria national team on Wednesday evening. Milos Veljkovic watched Serbia’s match against Norway from the sidelines as his team kept their dream of playing at the Euros alive.

Marco Friedl’s Austria debut could hardly have gone any better, as he started and played the full 90 minutes of a 2-1 friendly win against Greece. Adrian Grbic (77’) and Christoph Baumgartner (80’) scored for Austria after Kostas Fortounis (63’) had put Greece ahead.

Friedl: "I hope that there are many more appearances to come"

“I’ve fulfilled a dream that I’ve had since I was a little kid. As I was going through all of the Austrian youth teams, the main goal was always to play for the senior side. I’m happy that we were able to win my first match and that I could do my bit for the 90 minutes. I hope that there are many more appearances to come,” Friedl told WERDER.DE.

On Thursday, focus shifted to another Werder defender on international duty, Milos Veljkovic. Serbia faced Norway in the play-offs for next year’s European Championship, progressing with a 2-1 win after extra time. The win means that Serbia are still in with a chance of qualifying for next year’s tournament. Veljkovic did not feature in the match and will now return to Bremen.

Also missing out on match action was Nick Woltemade. Germany U21’s friendly against France had to be cancelled after a positive Coronavirus test for one of the French players. All tests for the Germany side were negative. It is currently uncertain whether the second friendly match (Monday, 12/10/2020) will take place.

Yuya Osako is in line to play for Japan on Friday afternoon, as they face Cameroon at 14:00 CEST. Osako will return to Bremen after the match.
